The Dune Express

The Permian Basin, spanning West Texas and New Mexico, now features America’s longest conveyor belt. Atlas Energy Solutions’ “Dune Express” extends 42 miles from Kermit, Texas, into Lea County, New Mexico, transporting sand for hydraulic fracturing operations.

During the fracking process, liquid is pumped into the ground at high pressure to create fractures that release oil. The sand serves a critical function—keeping these fractures open as water, oil, and gas flow through them.

This $400 million project, partially funded when the company went public in March 2023, addresses logistical challenges in one of America’s most productive oil regions. The belt began operations in January and currently runs 12-14 hours daily at half capacity, with plans to transition to continuous operation later this year.

With a freight capacity of 13 tons and operating at 10 mph, the conveyor system was designed to improve efficiency and safety in sand transportation. Before the Dune Express, sand was typically hauled by tractor-trailers. CEO John Turner noted that replacing truck transport with the conveyor belt reduces road hazards in the heavily trafficked area.

This project could have an impact on the region’s economic interests. Currently, Texas leads U.S. oil production, with the Permian Basin generating over $113 billion in economic output and supporting more than 444,000 jobs. Neighboring New Mexico, the nation’s second-largest oil producer, depends on the oil and gas industry for approximately 50% of its state budget, funding services like education and infrastructure.

The project has raised environmental concerns regarding potential impacts on local habitats. However, regional officials have noted that the reduction in truck traffic may decrease accidents on nearby highways, creating safer conditions for road users while supporting the economic activity of this energy-producing region.

Research Reveals Four Texas Cities Among 50 Best US Cities for Work and Play

took a new approach to evaluating US cities for their desirability as destinations for business and pleasure.

Traditionally cities are judged for their potential for tourist development mostly by examining how many visitors a place has and the money that is generated there. The Resonance study took a different approach. They instead used 16 different criteria to judge a city’s value as a potential place for tourist development. Those data points included things like how many major league sports teams that were housed there; direct flights to the city; hotel rooms; and on-line reviews such as Yelp and Trip Advisor.

It is not a surprise that Los Angeles and New York came in second and first place, respectively. Four major Texas cities also made the list, but in a somewhat unexpected order: Dallas ranked third; Houston came in twelfth; San Antonio, 21st; and in 23rd place was Austin.

Texas Boasts Best Job Growth in Country

Since Rick Perry took over the governorship of Texas in December of 2000, the state added 1.2 million net jobs. Quite impressive considering during the same time period the country as a whole lost 1.1 million jobs.

Perry Pursues Presidency

The remarkable job increase is due to a 40% increase in health service and education jobs over the past ten years, plus a 67% surge in the number of mining jobs, including the flourishing oil industry. Perry’s success looks good on his resume as he competes for the nomination of the Republican Party to be the GOP’s candidate for president, but it is not clear if the great record on the state level can be easily translated into success on the federal level.

Next Five Years Looking Good

Texas is the front runner of states that will add the most jobs during the coming five years, on a percentage basis. According to research done by Moody’s Analytics, total employment is predicted to grow by 2.9% each year until 2015. In other words, over the next five years there will be about 1.6 million new jobs in Texas.

Texas is Special

So what’s so special about Texas? For one thing, the state offers businesses low taxes, a friendly business atmosphere, and an almost unlimited supply of youthful workers. Texas ranks number six in the Forbes list of Best States for Business and Careers. The state is also not afraid to use aggressive tactics to try and persuade new businesses to relocate so they can enjoy the great benefits that business receives there.

Persuasion

When Washington was considering raising taxes last year for the state’s top earners, Governor Perry sent a letter to 90 companies headquartered there, including Amazon.com, Microsoft and Starbucks, trying to persuade them to move to Texas.

Perry’s letter stated in part:

“As the State of Washington considers a multibillion-dollar tax increase for citizens and businesses … I invite you to consider your future in America’s new land of opportunity: the State of Texas. If Washington doesn’t want your business, Texas does. Texas has no personal income tax and no interest in getting one.”
