Based in Paris, France, Sanofi SA is a worldwide pharmaceutical company. As of 2014 it was the fifth largest in the world, measured by prescription sales. It was originally established – known as Sanofi-Aventis — in 2004 following the merger of Aventis and Sanofi-Synthélabo. Today the company engages in the following areas: R&D, manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceutical drugs principally in the prescription market, but the firm also develops OTC medication. Seven major areas it covers are: cardiovascular, central nervous system, diabetes, internal medicine, oncology, thrombosis and vaccines.
