The Shoprite Group of Companies – Africa’s largest food retailer – runs 1,303 corporate and 427 franchise outlets in 17 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. It boasted a reported turnover of R41,054 billion for last half of 2011. Headquartered in the Western Cape province of South Africa, it is a public company listed on the JSE Limited, with secondary listings on both the Namibian and Zambian Stock Exchanges, being owned by close to 5,000 shareholders. It is also the leading food retailer on the continent.
