Neiman Marcus Company

World renown as a high-end luxury retail specialty department store, Neiman Marcus competes with such upscale superstores as Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney’s New York, Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale’s and Von Maur. The company’s headquarters is at One Marcus Square in Downtown Dallas. The Neiman Marcus Group is also the owner of Bergdorf Goodman, another retail department store specializing in high fashion.

Neiman Marcus was founded in 1907 when Herbert Marcus, his sister Carrie, and Carrie’s husband Alan Neiman invested $25,000 in the retail business in Dallas. Choosing to sell higher quality clothing than what was generally available in Texas at the time; all the merchandise which Carrie purchased on her New York buying trip was completely sold out within just a few weeks to the cash rich but fashion poor people of Texas.

I dreamed all my life of the perfect store for women. Then I saw Neiman Marcus, and my dream came true.
— Edna Woolman Chase, editor of Vogue (1936), quoted in Commentary 1957
