Bristol-Myers Squibb

The company was founded in 1858 by Edward R. Squibb, MD, in Brooklyn. In 1887 friends of Squibb, William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers bought out a drug manufacturing company in Clinton, New York, and together the three innovators laid the foundation of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is a leading developer of cancer drugs and other pharmaceuticals. In 1998 the FDA gave Bristol-Myers Squibb approval to market Excedrin®Migraine for the relief of pain from migraine headaches, the first such medication available to consumers without a prescription. The company received the national medal of Technology in 1998 from President Bill Clinton. This is the highest honor offered by the American government for recognition of technological innovation, “for extending and enhancing human life through innovative pharmaceutical research and development, and for redefining the science of clinical study through groundbreaking and hugely complex clinical trials that are recognized models in the industry.”

In 2001 Bristol-Myers Squibb was named “America’s Most Admired Pharmaceutical Company” by FORTUNE Magazine.

In May of 2012 Lamberto Andreotti was appointed Bristol-Myers Squibb’s newest CEO. Andreotti had already been with the firm for 12 years in high leadership roles both domestically and internationally.
